Since birth we are introduced to different sets of truths, to systems a number of which are several thousand years old. They make an impression of being right and complete. We rely on them and involuntarily take them as reference points, even more when they are endorsed by authority, history or the sheer number of people involved in them. Systems in which one does everything one is told offer an immense feeling of comfort and safety - no one has to think for oneself, no one questions or finds out for oneself - it is so much easier to follow.
